Original Equipment (O.E.) self-supporting run-flat summer tires are an appropriate tire choice for sporty vehicles imported to the United States from Europe and Asia. Developed for use on new cars and light trucks, these tires offer temporary extended mobility in the event a puncture allows complete pressure loss, as well as provide a sporty blend of ride quality, noise comfort and handling, along with dry and wet traction. These tires are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. Goodyear RunOnFlat (ROF) tires incorporate special sidewall reinforcements that support the weight of the vehicle even after sustaining air pressure losses that would render conventional tires immobile. While internal tire damage will likely make replacement necessary, ROF tires are designed to endure being run on while flat for up to 50 miles at speeds up to 55 mph and provide drivers the temporary extended mobility necessary to drive through stormy weather and away from dangerous situations. Original Equipment self-supporting run-flat summer tires are most often repurchased as direct replacements for pairs and sets of worn out Original Equipment tires and ROF tires are only recommended for vehicles originally equipped with self-supporting run-flat tires and a tire pressure monitoring system. At best, most run flat tires on a small, performance based vehicle cause the vehicle to ride with the harshness of a one ton truck. That comment is based on my experience with Michelin and Bridgestone run flats our current BMW Z4 (2 sets) and a previously owned Lexus SC 430. The primary driver of the Z4 is my wife whose driving style and requirements of tires is different than mine (can anyone identify?). Compared to the previously mentioned tires she LOVES the Goodyear Excellence tires for their ride comfort. They are also designed to be an all around tire with above average performance in the wet. As purchasers of any product I believe that all we can expect is the product to perform as advertised. These tires do just that. The Goodyears do not shy away from spirited driving but they are not something that I would have on my car (1999 BMW M3 convertible). If you need a run flat for your wife's sports car where a smooth ride, low noise, and very good all-season traction is required, this may be the tire for you. It was for my wife.
